ISAR Moscow's Mission

ISAR-Moscow's mission is to develop programs that incorporate education, culture, science, art and personal enlightenment in environmental protection and the sustainable use of natural resources. ISAR-Moscow's programs provide informational and financial resources to environmental NGOs. These resources support the professional development of environmental NGOs, allowing them to more effectively express their ideas and interests to the public and the government, and to build coalitions with other NGOs and initiative groups.

ISAR Moscow's Activities

ISAR-Moscow conducts seminars, conferences, trainings, internships and exchanges. The staff also provides informational resources through their quarterly publication Ecologos [NEWS/PUBLICATIONS>Network Publications] and through the publication of other books and articles. Current activities can be found on the office's Russian-language website www.isarmos.ru.

ISAR Moscow History

ISAR-Moscow was the first ISAR office established in the former Soviet Union. Prior to the opening of the office in 1992, though, ISAR representatives worked in Moscow in cooperation with the Socio-Ecological Union (SEU), the largest umbrella group for environmentalists in the FSU. This work focused particularly on organizing the 1991 Conference for Ecological Nongovernmental Organizations and an electronic mail project, which provided computer technology and Internet access to hundreds of Russian NGOs. After the creation of the e-mail network, in May 1993, ISAR-Moscow launched a multi-faceted small grants and technical assistance program with a grant from the US Agency for International Development (USAID). From 1993-1998, this program, known as the Seeds of Democracy Program, provided more than 400 small grants - totaling over $1 million in funding - to Russian environmental NGOs.

In April 1999, with generous start-up funding from the Winston Foundation, ISAR-Moscow initiated a small grants program to address nuclear safety in Russia. For four years, with the support of the Winston Foundation, the W. Alton Jones Foundation and the Ploughshares Fund, ISAR supported local and regional citizen initiatives in the field of disarmament and facilitated the growth of the citizen movement for disarmament and nuclear safety. Parallel activities included a nuclear safety exchange program organized by ISAR staff in Washington and Moscow in 2000. This work continues in the form of regional seminars, trainings, publications and small grants.
