ISAR-RFE's activities include the following:
- small grants program for environmental projects
- consultations for NGOs throughout the Russian Far East;
- trainings for NGOs on professional development and management
- publication and distribution of informational resources for environmental NGOs;
- development of an infrastructure that unites the environmental movement in the RFE.
ISAR placed a representative in the Far East in 1993 and opened a regional office
in late 1994. The role of the representative, and then the office, was to serve as
a clearinghouse for citizen initiatives in the nine territories of the region:
Amur region, Kamchatka, Magadan, Sakhalin, Primorye, Khabarovskii region, Chukotka,
Jewish Autonomous Region and the Republic of Sakha.
From 1994-2001 ISAR-RFE implemented a series of programs financed by USAID:
- An environmental small grants program, through which 214 projects received funding in the first two years;
- An environmental education publishing program, providing materials for local teachers and activists.
- A environmental education journal, "Listya v Ladonyakh" (Leaves in the Palms)
- Informational bulletin "Zapiski s Dalnovo Vostoka" (Notes from the Far East), for the general NGO community in the Russian Far East;
- A regional NGO database with information on registered and non-registered environmental NGOs and on all registered NGOs in the nine Far East territories
- A NGO Support grants and information program.
